I don’t know, I really just don’t know. Do I love this band? Do I find them ever so boring? I just can’t decide between the two extremes and it’s really annoying me. I mean, the production of Beauty Never Ceases is second to none. Their use of mixing and electronics really does set them apart from many other pop-punk bands, and gives the band an added depth. An added depth that is best demonstrated on “Keep Breathing and the instrumental final track “The Colour Of Closure. In fact, the beautifully haunting vocals and synth on of “Keep Breathing was what first got me hooked on to Urgency in the first place. The guitars are also pretty tight and it’s obvious ...

You know when you discover a new band and are on the very verge of falling in love with them? Their name is cool, they wear nice clothes and the music is fantastic.“Oh man, this intro is so rad! I can’t wait to hear the vocals. But then it hits. The bad, God awful vocals; and you sit there wondering where it all went wrong. No, you won’t buy their record and no, you defiantly won’t put yourself through another second of this horrible torture.  So imagine my surprise and general all round good feelings when Chicago’s 2*Sweet managed to pull off the vocals; as well as the silly name. Fantastic and all round happiness you might say? Well yes. Except that ...

If Frou Frou and Azure Ray were to make love in a cosmic indie universe it would sound like this. Too bad Inner Banks’ is not a screamer though because the instrumentals (as virginal as they are) wear thin before this one’s over. Soon to be in Zach Braff’s iPod: “Glittering Sky “Euphoric is a four-letter word: Azure Ray, Frou Frou, Japancakes

Mogwai - Young Team

Release Date: October 21 , 1997

A benchmark in the “How To Make Good Post-Rock: For Dummies, Scotland’s Mogwai’s debut album, Young Team, is epic in the sense that it just fits every facet of a good post-rock band together seamlessly, as to come off almost supernaturally casual in the process. Standout track, “Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home chances a good instrumental with the bass guitar on the forefront of this hypnotizing track. The cyclical four-string twists and mutters amongst shimmering guitar melodies. That track alone is worth checking out 1997’s best bet for an instrumental tour de force. For Fans Of…: Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Character, Seaworthy, Arab Strap

Let me take a step back in time to about a year ago: I was about a month into my junior year of high school, and I hadn’t even gotten my driver’s license yet. I didn’t have a girlfriend (Some things never change..), and I was more or less a complete loser (Still awaiting development on this aspect as well). I had yet to even come across UpBeetMusic.com, let alone write for it. I can’t tell you exactly what my musical obsessions were at the time, but I can guarantee they were nothing like what they are now. It’s amusing to think about how my tastes in music have evolved in the past year. Had the question, “Dan, do you ...

The Midway State - The Midway State

I have to be honest with all of you now. I was a little biased before I even heard this band; as soon as I knew they had a piano in their group, a little piece of me was already sold. And after hearing a handful of demos I was more than excited to hear The Midway State’s self-titled EP. But as with many bands, the demos sometimes do more for you than the actual finished product. My initial love could’ve worked against the Canadian five-piece, and, as expected, as the first track “Met a Man On Top The Hill began and played out, I did feel a little disappointed in the way the song progressed. The intro and drumming grabbed me ...

A soundtrack to the apocalypse one might say, the seminal piece F#A# (Infinity) stands as a fan-favorite of God Speed! You Black Emperor's influential work. Combining rich orchestral atmospherics with chilling taped samples (apocalyptic preacher, incoming train, etc.), instrumental post-rock doesn’t get more moving that this. Suitably featured in the movie 28 Days Later, “East Hastings stands out as the most powerful track, arguably rivaling the unforgettable spoken-word poem depicting the wake of a gruesome apocalypse on a global scale in “Dead Flag Blues. A revolutionary album in all senses of the statement.

Wow. I am taken aback. First thing you need to know about me is that I pretty much dislike 95% of all rap music. I think it’s shallow, immature, unoriginal, and takes more connections than talent. However, I’m not saying rappers are not talented. Hell, I certainly couldn’t do it, but most rappers don’t sing, don’t play an instrument, don’t create their own beats, and don’t produce their own work. Also, I’ll admit that I know very little about rap, so I’m not going to go into analyzing beats and production and all that. Now I’ll revisit my first statement, “Wow. Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor absolutely blew me away and I’ve finally figured out why. As a practicing Muslim, he ...
