Okay, let’s not beat around the proverbial bush and I’ll be really honest with you. I don’t really like much British music past about 95’. Despite coming from this little island in the sea. I’m a perfect example of Americanisation, well the music side of things anyway. 75% of my favourite bands and artists are from across the pond, with a few places saved for some bands from Europe and other continents. So with my oh so secret shame in mind let us begin. After having nothing particularly interesting to do on a Tuesday evening, my friend and I managed to get ourselves in for free at a local music venue and we came across “Four Day Hombre. A five piece melodic indie band ...

Aiden - Rain In Hell

As influential and important of a city as Seattle has become to the music industry, it is home to some of the most embarrassing blemishes on the face of music as we know it. Victory’s most recent cash-cow Aiden have returned with the follow-up to their harshly criticized 2005 release, Nightmare Anatomy, entitled Rain In Hell. To be completely honest, I came into this review with a serious dislike for this band. After having to suffer through their live show in order to see Bayside perform their acoustic set last December, I can honestly say that I owe Aiden absolutely no sincerity. Despite all of this, I had hoped that Aiden took all the harsh criticism they’ve received to heart ...

+44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating

I could write most of this review on how this isn't Blink-182, better than Angels & Airwaves, and all the breakup drama. Obviously I won't. I listen to this album with a fresh insight, you should too. The album as a whole, feels really fresh and original. It's struck a chord with me that while Blink weren't neccessarily original, they always seemed to be ahead of their game. It's a dark moody trip and it's awfully melancholy. The music kicks in with "Lycanthrope", a great track. Backed with a sexy trademark Hoppus bass line, sawing guitars and the like. It's a nice heavy opener. We're then straight into 'Baby, Come On'. A little more upbeat than the last track. "155" is a nice little ...

New Found Glory - Coming Home

Release Date: September 19 , 2006

You'd be lying if you grew up on pop punk and said you didn't enjoy New Found Glory. Along with Blink-182, they wrote song after song about how you were feeling, how awkward girls were, and all of life's problems at 16. It's no surprise that obviously, the band were going to age and mature. Catalyst, the fourth studio album from the band showed signs of maturity, but it was kind of a mess. It sold well, but it was a slow album, and it seemed forever to actually take the time out to try and enjoy it. Coming Home is definitely a New Found Glory album. They're ...

Urgency - Beauty Never Ceases EP

I don’t know, I really just don’t know. Do I love this band? Do I find them ever so boring? I just can’t decide between the two extremes and it’s really annoying me. I mean, the production of Beauty Never Ceases is second to none. Their use of mixing and electronics really does set them apart from many other pop-punk bands, and gives the band an added depth. An added depth that is best demonstrated on “Keep Breathing and the instrumental final track “The Colour Of Closure. In fact, the beautifully haunting vocals and synth on of “Keep Breathing was what first got me hooked on to Urgency in the first place. The guitars are also pretty tight and it’s obvious ...

You know when you discover a new band and are on the very verge of falling in love with them? Their name is cool, they wear nice clothes and the music is fantastic.“Oh man, this intro is so rad! I can’t wait to hear the vocals. But then it hits. The bad, God awful vocals; and you sit there wondering where it all went wrong. No, you won’t buy their record and no, you defiantly won’t put yourself through another second of this horrible torture.  So imagine my surprise and general all round good feelings when Chicago’s 2*Sweet managed to pull off the vocals; as well as the silly name. Fantastic and all round happiness you might say? Well yes. Except that ...

The Inner Banks - The Inner Banks

Label: Dag! Records
Purchase Album
Release Date: December 5 , 2006
Rating: 2.5 Stars
If Frou Frou and Azure Ray were to make love in a cosmic indie universe it would sound like this. Too bad Inner Banks’ is not a screamer though because the instrumentals (as virginal as they are) wear thin before this one’s over. Soon to be in Zach Braff’s iPod: “Glittering Sky “Euphoric is a four-letter word: Azure Ray, Frou Frou, Japancakes

Mogwai - Young Team

Artist: Mogwai

Label: Jet Set Records
Purchase Album
Release Date: October 21 , 1997
Rating: 4.0 Stars
A benchmark in the “How To Make Good Post-Rock: For Dummies, Scotland’s Mogwai’s debut album, Young Team, is epic in the sense that it just fits every facet of a good post-rock band together seamlessly, as to come off almost supernaturally casual in the process. Standout track, “Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home chances a good instrumental with the bass guitar on the forefront of this hypnotizing track. The cyclical four-string twists and mutters amongst shimmering guitar melodies. That track alone is worth checking out 1997’s best bet for an instrumental tour de force. For Fans Of…: Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Character, Seaworthy, Arab Strap

Let me take a step back in time to about a year ago: I was about a month into my junior year of high school, and I hadn’t even gotten my driver’s license yet. I didn’t have a girlfriend (Some things never change..), and I was more or less a complete loser (Still awaiting development on this aspect as well). I had yet to even come across UpBeetMusic.com, let alone write for it. I can’t tell you exactly what my musical obsessions were at the time, but I can guarantee they were nothing like what they are now. It’s amusing to think about how my tastes in music have evolved in the past year. Had the question, “Dan, do you ...

The Midway State - The Midway State

Artist: The Midway State
Album: The Midway State
Label: Remedy Records
Purchase Album
Release Date: September 12 , 2006
Rating: 4.5 Stars
I have to be honest with all of you now. I was a little biased before I even heard this band; as soon as I knew they had a piano in their group, a little piece of me was already sold. And after hearing a handful of demos I was more than excited to hear The Midway State’s self-titled EP. But as with many bands, the demos sometimes do more for you than the actual finished product. My initial love could’ve worked against the Canadian five-piece, and, as expected, as the first track “Met a Man On Top The Hill began and played out, I did feel a little disappointed in the way the song progressed. The intro and drumming grabbed me ...
