As influential and important of a city as Seattle has become to the music industry, it is home to some of the most embarrassing blemishes on the face of music as we know it. Victory’s most recent cash-cow Aiden have returned with the follow-up to their harshly criticized 2005 release, Nightmare Anatomy, entitled Rain In Hell. To be completely honest, I came into this review with a serious dislike for this band. After having to suffer through their live show in order to see Bayside perform their acoustic set last December, I can honestly say that I owe Aiden absolutely no sincerity. Despite all of this, I had hoped that Aiden took all the harsh criticism they’ve received to heart and, dare I say, improved their sound.

Such is not the case, however, as Rain In Hell is god awful. Almost everything about it is completely rehashed, overdone, and quite frankly, very annoying. There is simply no reason for anyone to enjoy this band’s music. The fact that bands can chant lyrics like, “Burn Your Friends! repeatedly and continue to be adored by thousands of thirteen year olds across the country is borderline disgusting. Vocalist Wil Francis couldn’t carry a tune if he had a Mack truck, let alone a bucket, and the lyrics he “sings are so bad that at times they seem like a joke. They’ve successfully ripped off just about every prominent Goth-punk band to ever exist (See: The overly obvious AFI influence in “We Sleep Forever) and have created a group that will undoubtedly continue to sell thousands of records until this “scene inevitably blows over. Congratulations, I guess.

To put it bluntly, if you’re going to rip off the sounds of more popular bands in order to gain popularity, at least rip off some halfway decent bands. This Goth-punk-morbid-depressed-dying trend needs to do just that—Die. Rain In Hell is one of the worst releases of 2006, and I fear for anyone who thinks otherwise. Do yourself a favor and stay far, far away from this one.
