First Glance: The Higher - On Fire

higher.jpg We all know the number of reason's to hate Panic! At The Disco, but despite all that, there are still a few reasons to love them... melodies you can't shake and rhythms you can't help but get up to. The Higher were out of the gates of Las Vegas first but have yet to hit pop culture as hard as their exclamation marked neighbors. They're hoping to change all that with their upcoming release, On Fire (Their first on Epitaph Records), and they're sure to catch your attention if they haven't done so already. So keep your eye's open festival goers, starting March 6, you might have another band to throw your bottles at.

I could write most of this review on how this isn't Blink-182, better than Angels & Airwaves, and all the breakup drama. Obviously I won't. I listen to this album with a fresh insight, you should too. The album as a whole, feels really fresh and original. It's struck a chord with me that while Blink weren't neccessarily original, they always seemed to be ahead of their game. It's a dark moody trip and it's awfully melancholy. The music kicks in with "Lycanthrope", a great track. Backed with a sexy trademark Hoppus bass line, sawing guitars and the like. It's a nice heavy opener. We're then straight into 'Baby, Come On'. You'd be lying if you grew up on pop punk and said you didn't enjoy New Found Glory. Along with Blink-182, they wrote song after song about how you were feeling, how awkward girls were, and all of life's problems at 16. It's no surprise that obviously, the band were going to age and mature. Catalyst, the fourth studio album from the band showed signs of maturity, but it was kind of a mess. I don’t know, I really just don’t know. Do I love this band? Do I find them ever so boring? I just can’t decide between the two extremes and it’s really annoying me. I mean, the production of Beauty Never Ceases is second to none. Their use of mixing and electronics really does set them apart from many other pop-punk bands, and gives the band an added depth. An added depth that is best demonstrated on “Keep Breathing� and the instrumental final track “The Colour Of Closure�. A benchmark in the “How To Make Good Post-Rock: For Dummies�, Scotland’s Mogwai’s debut album, Young Team, is epic in the sense that it just fits every facet of a good post-rock band together seamlessly, as to come off almost supernaturally casual in the process. Standout track, “Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home� chances a good instrumental with the bass guitar on the forefront of this hypnotizing track. The cyclical four-string twists and mutters amongst shimmering guitar melodies. That track alone is worth checking out 1997’s best bet for an instrumental tour de force. For Fans Of…: Godspeed! I have to be honest with all of you now. I was a little biased before I even heard this band; as soon as I knew they had a piano in their group, a little piece of me was already sold. And after hearing a handful of demos I was more than excited to hear The Midway State’s self-titled EP. But as with many bands, the demos sometimes do more for you than the actual finished product.
